I'd usually write this in my journal, but this week I've decided to share. Writing lists like these help keep the tiny treasures in perspective as each week passes on:
1. My mother, out of the hospital with her health under control. And for friends who checked in and provided support, even by simply lending an ear to our troubles.
2. Discovering these beautiful flowers at a farmer's market in Union Square. My sister and I laughed because up close they look like tiny brains:
3. Finally getting to see Beasts of the Southern Wild. The movie is far from perfect and has received its share of criticism, mostly notably here and here, but my goodness the actress Quvenzhane Wallis truly steals your heart:
4. Escaping away for a few hours at a cafe. Curling up into a seat by the window with a chai tea and a good book, your mind can forget about hospital rooms, coordinating family visits, monitoring your mom's medications and painful joints that come with forgetting to take your own medicine. Instead you take a few hours on a Sunday for yourself, soak up bits of the autumn sun streaming through that window, and read.
5. Receiving snail mail from a dear friend, at the precise moment you needed her words.
6. Booking a vacation and feeling strange about the opportunity to indulge in something. As I look forward to some Miami sun in November, I surrounded myself with colorful leaves and pumpkins and realized that, for now, I am also grateful to enjoy the fall season.
7. Family coming together today to bring us many containers of homemade food, our refrigerator is filled to the brim with kindness and generosity. Iluminada said, "today is a celebration of love," and indeed it was.
