day 9, abecedarian: a poem in which the initial letters of the words beginning each line or stanza spell out the alphabet in order.
**
Always remember your ABCs, my mother told me,
Back straight,
Chin up,
Don't let them crush your spirit,
Even on the days you're feeling down.
Fake it until you make it. these were the
Gifts of wisdom my mother always told me, words that
Helped her adjust to life in the states.
I am impressed with how she was able to make the
Journey to this country with her spirit intact, especially
Knowing what new lessons have been thrown her way:
Lose your accent,
Master the English language, and
Never complain. after all, the country is filled with endless
Opportunities. not advancing fast enough? have
Patience. she soon learned the system tries to make you
Quit and blame yourself. but my mother is
Resilient,
Strong, and she
Taught her daughters through example. her spirit will not be
Undone. her struggles, her experiences, are all
Valid.
We've learned our own tactics to rise above
Xenophobia. always remember your ABCs, and always live
Your life with
Zeal.
